It is more than you need, frankly. DO you need to be writing with a stylus instead of typing? Honestly? If you end up using it mostly LIKE a laptop with the keyboard, then you have wasted a bunch of money on a nifty tablet feature you never use.

Do you know what kind of laptop is best for a college student? A cheap one. Do you know why? Let me explain.

Picture this. It is late, you are studying and you reach to grab your book, and your Monster Energy drink gets dumped onto your keyboard, because your desk is too small for all your books, the computer, and everything else on it, and as I said, it is WAY too late. You Might turn it off, remove the battery in time, and get it turned upside down quick enough.. or you might not. You want to replace an Expensive Laptop, or a cheap one, at this point?

Picture this. You just lugged all your books and stuff across campus, you get back to your room, and you toss your bookbag onto your bed just AFTER you realize the laptop is in there… and in slow motion, you watch the bag bounch off the bed as you hear the crunch of that freakishly small math book pushes down on the middle of your screen. A Tablet screen is much more expensive to replace than a regular screen. And, replacing a regular screen at a shop will cost you $ 300 to $ 500. What if that is what your laptop cost you? Better to just be able to replace the whole thing, eh?

Picture this. You are having a few friends over. One of them leans on your desk after a beer to many… and ends up putting his/her hand on the corner of your laptop, sending it crashing to the floor. Again… would you rather see this happen to a $ 350 Black Friday Special (or $ 350 Regular Best Buy special), or would you want to see this happen to a $ 1200 laptop?

Picture this. In 4 years, you are going to move on with your life. in 2 years, you are going to get serious with your studies. If your laptop lasts 2 years, you are probably going to replace it with one that better fits your specific studies. In 4 years, you might never touch a laptop again in preference to a desktop, and if you DO, you are going to want a brand new laptop, one that is up to date and stylin. So… would you rather spend $ 350 on something that WILL last 2 years and probably last 4 years… and maybe replace in 2 years with another $ 350 laptop… or would you rather spend $ 700 to $ 1200 on a laptop that you may have to replace in 2 years with ANOTHER $ 700 to $ 1200 laptop, that you are GOING to replace in 2 more years anyway?

So in short, a cheap laptop that will surf the net, play music, play DVDs and let you type papers is all you need. Seriously. Cheap and easy to replace when you destroy it.

end of line

Hi, I am in college and have considered bying a tablet pc for taking notes and such (it sounds good doesn’t it?) I thought so. But I ended up buying a normal laptop. Some people call it a life saver but personally, I don’t think it would make any difference but rather just clutter up my already small desk. I am majoring in ME and take classes in mostly mathematics and science. I do depend on my laptop (i use online books) but i take mostly all my notes on paper. I do not think tablet pc’s are as flexible as many people think they are. There are many people using tablet pc’s in my class but none of them ever flip them to convert to tablet to take notes. If you’re not already in college, i can tell you that classes generally work the same way as it does in high school. If you are already in college then i guess you would know what you need. personally i think that using a tablet is kinda obnoxious. I live in the silicon valley and this is where all computers are made and designed yet no one really uses one as it is kinda unpractical, not to mention more expensive than conventional laptops.

    Edit:

eh, i don’t agree with the person above me. i generally use computers for about 4 or more years before finding myself at a NEED to upgrade. but in all seriousness, many computers nowadays is all you will need for the rest of your life. I do CNC (computer numeric control) Product Design and also do music composition and production for my own fun and Core2Duo at 2.26 with enough ram is good enough for me. I would highly suggest you buy a solid laptop that will last you.

My Lenovo Thinkpad T400 has a spillproof keyboard and if someone did spill a drink on it, it would drain out the bottom, had anyone mistakenly thrown it on the floor It would have its magnesium alloy skeleton to protect it. it has solid aluminum hinges and reinforced plastic. I got it for 750$ at the lenovo site.

Here you are. Have fun in college.
